Plastic bags
By Ed Mitchell 13th July 2010
Tony Langham from Salisbury has been working hard to reduce the use of plastic bags and looking to share his work and build support. You can visit the Salisbury Plastic Bag Free website, and here is some more information:
Since Modbury became the first viilage to be PBF (plastic bag free) some 3 years ago- doesn’t time fly – there has been great interest in copying this. It’s no bad thing to copy something good and many community’s all over the UK have done exactly that. These groups are mostly led by people who, like me have been moaning about these manmade killers / polluters for 10 years+.
Having done my share of attending conferences with Medasset (who have been monitoring the Med Basin for 20 years) and walking 18 K along the wonderful Patara Beach in Turkey I’ve seen at first hand the damage these bags do and continue to do.
I like to think that Rebecca Hosking getting the OBE is a reward for all of us as getting rid of plastic bags is just the tip of the unsustainable packaging berg. There are now 210 such groups across the UK, sadly none to date in N.I! These groups all got together last year and thanks to suggestions from various Gt.London PBF groups we organised the first International PBF Day on Sept 12th last that eventually involved my friends from India and the US of A / Canada / N.Zealand / Australia.
Many MPs from all parties came to support their local groups across the UK with many local and national media outlets making reports. Even India schoolchildren took a stance.
I’m shortly publishing a UK-PBF Forum website that will contain 210 groups will all up to date info on this problem that we must get rid of because we do not need them. Every plastic bag that anyone has ever used is still on the planet.
If you all care about the environment and agree that thinking locally gets it done globally THEN JOIN / SUPPORT A GROUP OR JUST HAVE NO PLASTIC BAGS. We are all being made polluters if one wishes to have a decent quality of life and buy nice food, who said its good to shring wrap bannanas or cucumbers.
