In July 2008 Somerset County Council passed the UK’s first motion calling Somerset a Transition Local authority, but what does this mean?
Our Transition Councils ½ day workshop is an answer to this question. Transition Network is holding its first workshop specifically aimed at Local authority officers and members in London June 23rd.
There will be two sessions, 9.30-12.30 and 2-5. It will be a fabulous opportunity for those working in Councils to network with those who are at the cutting edge of sustainability work in local government and get the inside story on best practice in that area. You will also find out how, in these difficult times, working with Transition Initiatives in your area can save your authority money in delivering vital services and create very powerful community engagement that translates into real support for the communities you serve.
Transition Councils is a half day workshop designed to engage council officers and members with the benefits of becoming a Transition Council and we will explore how to work with Transition Initiatives in your area. It also provides you with an overview of the enormously successful Transition Towns model and practice, and an interactive engagement with some core Transition tools including a peak oil ‘master class’.
This workshop identifies ways in which you can work with Transition Towns in your area that will deliver your services better and more cost effectively as well as fostering a truly vibrant community engagement model.
Part of this workshop will be devoted to a peak oil ‘master class’, reviewing all the most up to date understandings and implications of what has been described as the most challenging issue facing our society. We will also provide invaluable information and a framework for an enhanced risk assessment procedure in all areas of council business, from strategic planning to transport infrastructure, to food and emergency planning.
We are offering two identical half day workshops on 23rd June, 2010, York Way, London N1. The cost of attending is £125. Please see the course page on the TT&C site on the course for more details.
These workshops are facilitated by Naresh Giangrande and Alexis Rowell. Naresh is one of the founders of Transition Town Totnes, the first Transition Town, and has been responsible for many of the structures and processes behind the enormously successful Totnes project. He’s also an expert on peak oil. As a councillor with the London Borough of Camden Alexis chaired the council’s all-party Sustainability Task Force from 2006-2010. He’s also the author of “Communities, councils and carbon – what we can do if governments won’t”, which is due to be published in October 2010.
