Transition Toronto (TTo) was formed in November 2009. Our goal is to be the ‘hub’ for overall planning, as well as engaging with, and helping build localised, neighbourhood based Transition Initiatives across the city. We have 5 members with basic Transition Training and 1 member is a Transition Trainer. Our current membership includes those registered on our website, as well as an e-mail list.
We have held, and collaborated on hosting several film nights and several popular workshops, e.g. canning, home energy auditing, Finance 101. Most recently, we held a three-part film making workshop and Transition Film Contest with the requirement of demonstrating a vision for a ‘transitioned’ Toronto in the future. The winning film will be posted on our website. Currently, we have four to five neighbourhood groups at various levels of activity. One east end group has been very engaged in front-yard and back-yard food growing, as well as harvesting & canning urban fruits from public land.
We work in collaboration with other non-profit groups on projects that overlap with our members’ interests and TTo’s goals: The Toronto Permaculture GTA for permaculture-related workshops and ‘work bees’ to give private gardens a permaculture makeover; The South Riverdale Food Working Group for outreach events and workshops; and Post Carbon Toronto who helped us get started.
To keep learning from other initiatives, we work closely with nearby Transition Towns in our province of Ontario, and helped foster a “Transition Twin Town” between Ipswich, Suffolk – UK, and Barrie, Ontario – Canada!
