Celebrating 10 years of Transition Town Totnes
By rob hopkins 15th March 2017 Culture & Society
Thursday March 9th 2017 was the day that we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Transition Town Totnes. It was a fairly arbitrary date to choose, and we had been planning to do it for a while, and it co-incided with the opening of our third annual TTT Film Festival, so it worked for us. It offered the opportunity to look back and to celebrate all that has happened so far.
As part of the evening, which also featured music, films and more, I gave an illustrated look back over 10 years of stories, projects, events and connections. I was joined by Jacqi Hodgson (who talked about the Totnes EDAP and Film Club), Carole Whitty (Transition Streets), Hilary Prentice (Inner Transition, Pulse Group), John Elford (Totnes Pound), Fiona Ward (REconomy, Economic Blueprint – see photo below), Hal Gilmore (Transition Tours), Wendy Stayte (nut tree planting and Incredible Edible), Mary Popham (Open Eco-Home weekend and the Eco-Homes Fair), Holly Tiffin (Grown in Totnes), Myrtle Cooper (Totnes 10 and Forking Local Food Festival), Frances Northrop (Caring Town Totnes), Jim Carfrae (Transition Homes) and Thea Platt (where next?).
Here is the audio of the reflection:
And then here are my slides from the occasion, broken into two parts so that they are uploadable: you can follow the whole thing from the comfort of your own living room: Part One here, and Part Two here. We can’t sadly send all the people round too, but it gives you a sense of the evening.
The evening also featured a rather beautiful object produced by the local New Lion Brewery, bottles that came wrapped in this wrapper which captured lots of peoples’ ‘I loved the moment when…’ reflections of their highlights from those 10 years. If you are passing through Totnes, they are still available from the Brewery. It is worth blowing this up as large as you can on your screen and squinting at the stories, it’s rather lovely…
It was a wonderful evening, thanks to everyone who came, who contributed, and who helped to make this initiative what it is. The evening kicked off a 4 month celebration of TTT’s turning 10, you can find out more about upcoming events here. Thanks to Claudia Apostolo for the photos.
