Climate Change Poetry Competition

By Ed Mitchell 16th September 2010

This looks fun. A climate change poetry competition. Thanks to Emily and Diana for recommending it.

Climate change is happening now – write now!

Climate change – we hear about it all the time, we see the floods, the food riots, the migration. We reuse our plastic bags, switch off our lights, get out of the car and onto the bus. We see our own weather changing, the late summer, the heavy rain, the mosquitoes. But not a lot of people are writing poetry about it. Poets, as Percy Bysshe Shelley said ‘are the unacknowledged legislators of the world’.

So get writing!…

Awel Aman Tawe is running a poetry competition encouraging people to write about climate change. ‘The arts are, and always have been, used to represent and argue new technologies, political ideas, social upheavals. They can explore climate change in ways that embrace conflict.’ So whether you agree or not that climate change is a problem, AAT would still like to hear your take on it, through poetry.

Gillian Clarke, the National Poet of Wales, and Menna Elfyn, award winning poet have agreed to judge this exciting competition. The closing date is November 30th.

Further information is available on Awel Aman Tawe’s website or by emailing Emily Hinshelwood.

The poetry competition is part of a larger Arts and Climate Change programme seeking to engage people in the issues through different art genres including film, animation, theatre, bookarts, collage, printmaking, storytelling and design. Awel Aman Tawe is a community energy charity (charity no 1114492) committed to tackling climate change.

Closing date: 30th November 2010

Prizes:

Adults:

  • 1st £200
  • 2nd £50
  • 3rd £25

Children:

  • 1st £20
  • 2nd £10
  • 3rd £5

Judge for poems in English: Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales since 2008. President of Tŷ Newydd writers’ centre, which she co–founded in 1990. Her latest books, At the Source and A Recipe for Water, are both published by Carcanet.

You may submit as many poems as you like as long as your entry is accompanied
by the correct fee. Cheques payable to Awel Aman Tawe.

  • Adults: £3 per poem or 4 for £10
  • Children: £1 per poem or 4 for £3

All poems submitted must be original work of the entrant. They cannot be returned so please don’t send your only copy. Each poem should be no more than 40 lines on any aspect of the theme of Climate Change. It must be typewritten. Please don’t put your name or address on the poems. Instead, you should put your name, contact details and titles of all poems submitted on an accompanying piece of paper.

The closing date is 30th November 2010. Prize winners will be notified by January 2011. A prize-giving evening with Gillian Clarke, Menna Elfyn and eco-poet Susan Richardson will take place in February 2011.

Copyright of each poem remains with the author, but Awel Aman Tawe has the unrestricted right to publish the winning poems.
