Community Land Trust Conference 2010

Citizens solving economic development and housing needs – CLT 2010
Our very own slug-trouser-wearing Rob is speaking a keynote at this year’s Community Land Trust conference. It looks to be a great event, and with the ‘Big Society’ looking increasingly likely, rather poignant. Here is some information:
What could the government’s idea of a ‘Big Society’ mean in practice? Community Land Trusts are one example of citizens taking control of their own futures and providing for their own needs, in partnership with local government and public bodies.
Community Land Trusts offer solutions not only to problems of unaffordable housing in rural locations, but to urban challenges too. And they’re not just about housing: Community Land Trusts create opportunities to protect and promote local enterprise, keeping money within the local economy and sustaining isolated or disadvantaged communities.
With a retrenchment in many areas of traditional public sector funding and a redoubled emphasis on best value, it’s more important than ever to explore options that provide long term solutions to the challenges of housing and economic development. Community Land Trusts have been tried and tested elsewhere – notably in the US – and there is a growing body of evidence to show that they are doable in the UK.
Now is the time to find out what CLTs are all about – or, if you are already involved in the movement, to update your skills and knowledge and share your experiences with others. This year’s national CLT conference, organised for the fourth successive year by New Start magazine and Community Finance Solutions, will be a chance to find out what is already happening and how you can be part of this new wave of citizen-led enterprise.
It will explore how CLTs can be a sustainable solution in a wide range of settings – encompassing housing, economic development and community empowerment.
