Connecting Transitions

By Yaz Brien 22nd March 2020

Our work has always been rooted in acting together locally to take care of each other and our planet globally. The spread of this pandemic reminds us just how interconnected we all are in this world. Like the ecological crisis, it exposes how unjust and unsustainable our global system is, while also highlighting our collective strengths and resilience. Communities all over the world are offering and receiving practical and emotional support, benefitting from existing connections and networks that groups like Transition have been fostering for years.

As we practice physical distancing with social solidarity, we invite you to join us online to connect, reflect and share. To explore how we’re feeling, the impacts for us, our communities and the world. To hear stories from each other about how this situation is being experienced in different places. To pause, reflect, and connect.

Mon 30th March – click the link to find details of your timezone:
13:00 – 14:30 (UK time) – https://everytimezone.com/s/d44cd138
19:00 – 20:30 (UK time) – https://everytimezone.com/s/7ad11d75

If this is your first time using Zoom:

  • From a mobile device (Android smartphone/tablet, Apple iPhone/iPad) it will simply prompt you to download the Zoom Cloud Meetings app from the App/Play Store.
  • From a computer you will need to download a small application file. This process is easy to complete on all commonly used browsers.

The opening and closing of the session will be in English. We hope to be able to self-organise into groups to use the language/s that will most help us communicate our feelings, fears, hopes and experiences.

We ask that you arrive on time, so that we can ground ourselves together, but feel free to stay for as much or as little time as you’re able.

There will be a maximum of 100 participants per session – we hope this will be enough, and we may plan further sessions according to need and energy.

When you join the Zoom session, please put your preferred language next to your name as this will help us to make groups based on languages. We recommend that you use a headset if possible to improve sound quality on the call.

Hello, I’ve pressed the link but obviously it’s the wrong time. To register to join do I have to do anything or just press the link tomorrow at right time? Thanks.

We’re really looking forward to connecting with you all today. Two important pieces of information:

First – UK time moved from GMT to BST on Sunday. This means that if you are outside of the UK the start time is GMT+1. You can check the session time in your timezone here:
      13:00 – 14:30 (UK time) – https://everytimezone.com/s/d44cd138
      19:00 – 20:30 (UK time) – https://everytimezone.com/s/7ad11d75

Second – there is no pre-registration. Please click on the Zoom link a few minutes before the start time to join us. There is a Zoom limit of 100 people per session, but we think that this will be enough and hope that you are all able to join us. https://zoom.us/j/116656507

Is the meeting full. The link is saying it’s not valid? If so can we follow on facebook as earlier?

Our online call was joined/hacked by people who were being abusive, racist and showing offensive images. We’d like to try to meet again, but if the same thing happens we will be ending the call. Here is a fresh link if you are still able to join us – https://zoom.us/j/136172261

This is so terrible. Maybe it will become necessary to restrict participation by encryption. There are true nihilists out there who really do want to see systems crash, impervious to the impacts it might have on them personally. I am so sorry to see a development like this.

Thank you! Ever resilient we were able to quickly re-convene the session and continued to have positive and connecting conversations with friends from all over the world. We’re continuing to pay attention to updates regarding different online platforms and security – and will try to keep maintaining a balance between holding a safe(r) space whilst ensuring that our meetings and sessions can be easily accessed by all.

Hello I missed the call on Monday, is there a recording of it to be listened to anywhere? Thankyou, looking for some common ground and insight in resilient life moving forwards in these uncertain times.

We didn’t record the sessions on Monday as we spent much of our time in small groups connecting, reflecting and sharing. We hope to offer more blogs, resources and meetings in the near future – and will be publishing details on here, Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/transitionnetwork) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/transitiontowns). We look forward to connecting.

    goeiedag,
    groetjes,
    Frank

      Hi Frank,

Thanks for your message and support from Belgium. We will be working with Transition Hubs (including the Belgian Hub) to explore our next steps and responses to the global pandemic and will publish updates and any events on here, Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/transitionnetwork) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/transitiontowns). We look forward to connecting.
