Transition Network is recruiting!
By Yaz Brien 16th October 2019
Are you interested in joining a creative, innovative and committed team working to support the international Transition movement, amplify stories of community-led change, and nurture collaborations across difference?
Do you have skills and experience that you are willing to use flexibly in response to fast-changing needs and opportunities?
Can you contribute to our development as a non-hierarchical organisation exploring, and seeking to model, the changes we want to see in the world?
We plan to expand our small team and are looking for a person, or potentially two people, who could contribute in multiple ways to our work. We need people with the dynamism, flexibility and self-awareness to occupy shifting roles within our constantly-evolving structure, identifying and helping to shape the projects where their experience, knowledge and creativity will have the greatest impact.
Right now, we have a particular need for someone with the skills and experience to lead on the development of internal policies, systems and practices which are aligned to our shared governance model, enhance the wellbeing of our team and support us to deliver on our organisational purpose. We are also very keen to broaden the diversity of perspectives and lived experience in what is still a disproportionately (although not exclusively) white, middle class team.
This is an unusual recruitment exercise which will require candidates to explore possibilities with the selection panel and to be comfortable with a degree of uncertainty. Your questions and ideas are very welcome throughout the process. The potential reward is a fascinating job which aligns with your values and will enable you to move dynamically between a focus on organisational development and external delivery.
Whilst our team is mainly UK-based at the moment, we support an international movement and are actively seeking opportunities to distribute power, influence, resources and opportunities for paid work as widely as possible. We are very happy to explore the practicalities and costs (carbon and financial) of employing individuals based in mainland Europe or beyond. We encourage you to apply for the role if you feel you meet the person specification.

The deadline for applications is Monday 11 November at 12.00 midday GMT.

I am a GP who only recently came to understand how imminent climate catastrophe was, and decided, for my own sanity as much as anything, to do as much as I could to help limit the damage at the same time as well as doing something to contribute towards the development of sustainable communities, which were essential whatever the state of the climate. I have formed and group called The Planet Doctors for facebook and Instagram in the first instance. our aim is to enable those with climate anxiety to help themselves by taking part in reducing their own and their communities carbon footprint. Several of my GP colleagues plan, from their surgeries over Dorset, to connect those with anxiety to the leaders of the Transition town projects. For my part I will be reaching out as far as I can, by setting up a video blog and encouraging as many as possible to take part while at the same time inviting them to contact me personally should they want to. Myself and my colleague, Elaine Harland, the project leader for Verwood, East Dorset, which is to be the first town taking part, would love advice, training and support from yourselves who have so much knowledge already, I would also love you to follow and share my video blog with a view to being able to spread it far and wide. Thank you so much. We have no website at the moment.
Hi Anne – thank you for sharing your story with us, and for developing this piece of valuable work with your colleagues.
There are some Transition groups in the Dorset area that may be best placed to offer you advice, support and local contacts as you develop your work. You can search for your nearest Transition group here – https://transitionnetwork.org/transition-near-me/
There’s also lots of helpful information, resources and guides on our ‘Do Transition’ webpages here – https://transitionnetwork.org/do-transition/
Occasionally Transition groups from around the world will offer webinars or online training that you might find of benefit – if you follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook you’ll see updates and notifications about these.
Thank you!
