London and Thames Valley transition gathering, 11-June, Heathrow
By Ben Brangwyn 21st April 2011
Transitioners in London and the Thames Valley to meet on 11-June-2011 at Grow Heathrow
If the previous achievements of the social innovators and community activists at Grow Heathrow are anything to go by, this’ll be an excellent event.
A packed day starts at 10am with tea, mingling and a tour of the site. The tour should be a real highlight – what these people have done to the site is nothing short of miraculous. Here’s a beautifully shot 10 minute movie of what they’ve been up to.
There will be workshops, world cafe sessions, plenary discussions, sharing of experiences and presentations. And throughout, there’ll be that fertile territory (think “edge” in permaculture terms) where hardcore activism meets transition.
For more info, check out the event page on the Grow Heathrow pages.
And if you want to get a fascinating insight into how transformative a transition initiative can be, take a good look at the astonishing levels of local support that this group has garnered, doubly surprising because a) they’re incomers and b) they’re squatting on local land.
The stand out quote for me was this:
“They should be given a medal and the site compulsary purchased on their behalf by the local borough. I sincerely wish the Grow Heathrow project well in their bid against eviction – as a shining light of what can be done with lots of vision and very little money.”
Transition Heathrow – teaching the rest of us to see doorways where we think we see fences.
