Meanwhile Leases for community land projects
By Ed Mitchell 18th August 2011
The Food Policy Unit have been working with the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to increase access to space for growing fruit and veg. One of the tools that they have been developing with DCLG is a ‘meanwhile lease’ which could be used to temporarily lease land to a community for growing. The idea is to make it easier for landowners to temporarily lease land to the community for food growing projects.
This could be a very interesting opportunity for community groups which is worth looking into and supporting. They are currently looking for groups to try this out, and Transition groups with food projects would be ideal folks to give it a trial. Using one of these leases, and feeding back to Meanwhile would help them shape the document from direct experience.

Here is a bit more about the Meanwhile Project:
As a programme of work, the Meanwhile Project has been providing practical and financial support for a wide range of meanwhile approaches in towns throughout the country, as well as technical advice, manuals and common tools to help anyone who wants to do something positive in the meanwhile.
The Meanwhile Project is led by the Development Trusts Association as part of its wider Advancing Assets for Communities programme supported by the department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).
